Scientific Conference: Making English a Second Language in Schools

On the morning of May 19, 2026, Hong Duc University organized a school-level scientific conference entitled “Making English a Second Language in Schools” in Room 707 of the Administration Building. The conference attracted the participation of university leaders, researchers, lecturers, teachers, and students interested in English language teaching and learning in the context of current educational innovation.

Attending the conference on behalf of the University were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Trinh Viet Cuong, Vice Head of the Office of Science Management, Technology and International Cooperation, and Dr. Le Minh Hien, Vice Head of the Office of Academic Affairs. Representing the Faculty of Foreign Languages were Dr. Nguyen Thi Quyet, Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, and Dr. Nguyen Thanh Minh, Vice Dean of the Faculty. The conference also welcomed an external guest, M.A. Luu Thi Hong Sam, an English teacher from Lam Son Gifted High School.

The conference was organized to provide an academic forum for researchers, lecturers, and teachers to exchange new trends in English language teaching, share research findings and practical experiences, and propose solutions to enhance the effectiveness of implementing the policy of making English a second language in the education system.

In his opening speech, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Trinh Viet Cuong emphasized the increasingly important role of English in international integration and educational transformation. He affirmed that making English a second language is not only an inevitable requirement but also a driving force for innovating teaching methods, improving educational quality, and enhancing learners’ competitiveness in the era of globalization.

Following this, Dr. Nguyen Thi Quyet delivered the keynote report, outlining major orientations, opportunities, and challenges in implementing English-medium instruction at different educational levels in Vietnam. Her report raised many topical issues and laid the foundation for the in-depth discussions that followed.

Within the framework of the conference, several academic presentations with high scholarly and practical value were delivered. In the first session, M.A. Nguyen Thi Minh Anh presented the paper entitled “Beyond Monolingual CLIL: A Translanguaging-Informed Framework for English as a Second Language in Vietnamese Higher Education”, proposing a flexible multilingual approach to support English learners in the Vietnamese higher education context.

Next, M.A. Nguyen Thi Ngoc presented a study on final-year English pedagogy students’ responses to recent educational reforms, thereby reflecting students’ attitudes and adaptability to new professional requirements.

After a short break, the conference continued with presentations focusing on the practical implementation of English-medium instruction. M.A. Trinh Thi Thu Ha presented the paper “A Systematic Literature Review of English Medium Instruction in Higher Education: Challenges and Pedagogical Strategies”, which reviewed studies on English-medium instruction in higher education, analyzed common challenges, and proposed appropriate pedagogical strategies.

In addition, M.A. Trinh Cam Xuan offered a fresh perspective through her study on teaching mathematics in English at primary schools in Thanh Hoa Province, highlighting the challenges, current practices, and future prospects of this educational model.

The presentations received lively discussions and valuable feedback from participants. Many attendees agreed that making English a second language should be implemented comprehensively through curriculum development, teacher training, learning materials, and the creation of an English-using environment within schools. They also emphasized the importance of close cooperation among educational institutions, management agencies, and the community to create favorable conditions for learners to develop practical English proficiency.

The conference concluded at 10:00 a.m. on the same day in an open, academic, and collaborative atmosphere. The event not only strengthened connections among researchers and lecturers but also opened up new directions for research and practical applications in effectively implementing the policy of making English a second language in schools.
